EPUT: Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust Feedback
Update on last review
It gets worse since the last review… they waste 3 months+ on a subject access request for the recorded calls pretending it is taking a long time due to the collating of all the calls. Then now it looks like they are not releasing anything actually and have far too much to hide and dare not release proof that actually not ALL their calls are recorded like they claim they are, hence why staff can lie on records and on the phones and think they will get away with it.
A previous reviewer mentioned being lied about constantly. I completely believe her and have proof it happens and am here to tell how to avoid corrupt staff telling lies… record all your own calls especially when it transfers from the operators to the clinicians (only operators are recorded really) and realise the way the data protection works and that if they need to hide their failures they will try to like right now for example where they waste over 3 months pretending that they are releasing a SAR only to then realise it would prove what liars they are are and so not a swift turn around where they are sending me a letter instead of the calls.

Can’t even follow rules or regulations
So called ‘legal’ team can’t even release a subject access request on time. Extend it for the full two months and then miss the final deadline for WEEKS now and do not even bother to explain why or if they will ever release it at all. Not even a letter to the CEO can fix that, PALS chasing them up on it either… yeah, EPUT is this incompetent that even their LEGAL teams are capable of this kind of farce.

Mostly poor, but with a few outstanding staff
There are a few very good staff. Experience of Social Workers at EPUT is that I will never willingly sit in a room with one. Condescending, patronising, saying one thing, but doing another, treat patient as if they are a naughty child. One, in particular, a senior social worker seems to not have a scrap of empathy in her. She shouldn’t be dealing face to face with patients.
The good staff, one insightful, open minded Psychologist in particular, along with one very kind Psychiatrist are the two people who turned things around for me.
It’s a shame this service almost completely breaks a person to the point where suicide is a constant. Unfortunately I met more bad staff than good. Most seem to forget they are dealing with a person who has feelings. Terrible considering the vocation they chose.
As for the complaints process- a complete farce! No real answers, not surprising really. The people investigating complaints are staff that work with their colleagues. No chance of a non biased outcome. I think realising that the complaints process was actually making my mental health worse was probably one of the most eye opening things. Congratulations EPUT on firmly showing a person that they do not matter at all. Hopefully I don’t reach as low as I got, but if I do, I won’t even attempt the so called helplines.
I have to give you middle ratings as your few good staff were/are excellent. Administration staff very considerate and polite.

Utterly awful and traumatising experience
I would give EPUT negative stars if I can. I had been sectioned on 4 occasions and had been admitted into 3 of their wards previously, all wards I have been on have been appalling. I was accused of a million things by staff and I wasn’t treated with even a tiny bit of sincerity. I was told my problems were behavioural but meanwhile also sectioned under the MHA, been repeatedly restrained unnecessarily, and given drugs that they don’t even think I need. The consultants were very quick to label and send someone at significant risk out on their way on the basis that they have capacity and it’s their responsibility. Community support was non existent and I was often left to deteriorate until I have literally given up hope on myself and do not even want their help because their care do more harm than good. I came out of most contact with EPUT crying and in absolutely despair because I was treated like an animal. I was a young adult when I came under their services, their ignorance and negligence cost me the most important years of my life and they allowed my condition to worsen where it was preventable or at least managed to some degree. I nearly died and I certainly 100% will be if I’m still under EPUT. They told us lies after lies and nothing ever gets investigated. It’s honestly horrifying and till this day I’m still affected by the trauma EPUT left me with.

Berated and abused
I was sexuallg abused by members of staff here, TWICE. Both times detained under the MHA. Both investigated and acted on by police. Thrown out of their doors when in crisis until I almost killed myself. They don’t care

Horrible
Lost my friend under this trust. Failing people time and time again. Abusing patients, physically and emotionally. Constantly putting patients at risk, and not caring about safety in the slightest. Every experience I’ve had on a ward run by EPUT has left me more traumatized than I went in. If only giving 0 stars was an option.

A great experience
I had a fantastic experience with the staff and the care at The St Aubyn Centre. Thank you so much.

I would be dead if care was left to EPUT
I refer mainly to Coombewood, Rayleigh, The Rainbow Mother and Baby Unit (Linden Centre), and all Perinatal Outpatients run by EPUT. Rude and unprofessional staff. The Inpatient staff (including psychiatrists), outpatient care coordinators and duty teams completely uneducated in mental illness – particularly mine – OCD. They can have a chat, that’s about it. But anyone can be paid to have a chat. Chats don’t treat OCD. ERP does. With treatment, they do not treat people as individuals. Just a blanket diagnosis, and off you go. Mainly told I have depression and bipolar disorder, when I actually have OCD for 15 years, which I was shouting at them from the rooftops. Perinatal psychiatrists at EPUT particularly bad, because every patient labelled with antenatal or postnatal depression, and given venlafaxine and quetiapine (both proven to make OCD worse – but at time I naively entrusted perinatal psychiatrists with my care because I was so ill). It would be a joke if it wasn’t so serious. They were telling me pregnancy and motherhood is a very difficult, we don’t all get the bond straight away, and I was saying, yeah but I’m thinking about fainting and being sick every second – that’s my OCD – nothing to do with being a mum or baby. That’s not the problem!!! LISTEN to patients. And FAMILY. Nearly two year wait for psychology. Psychiatrists are, quite frankly, very patronising. If you knowledgeable about your illness and medications, they hate it. They hate the idea that you know more than them about your illness, so will do everything to belittle you. And prevent you from getting better. They put every barrier up possible if you suggest anything. It has to be on their terms. This isn’t how you treat mental illness, with no regard to how the patient feels. No medication follow ups in outpatient, except every 4 months. Not good enough on new medication, if you can’t function. I know a new mother that died from mirtazapine. Baby was 8 months old. Patients are ignored. You are telling them all they need to know to make a diagnosis, and treat you, but they dont listen and give you the wrong treatment! I could go on but you get the gist. Atrocious. NHS money pit. If you’ve had private care through work in the past, that’s a big black mark against your name. Don’t even bother. I worked hard and have a good job but with EPUT it’s used against you!!!! I’ve spent £30,000, that I don’t have, over 4 years to get better. Because I have a good life and knew I could get better. I say again, I would be dead, and my 4 year old son would be without a mother, if it was left to EPUT. Especially guilty are The Mother and Baby Unit, and Outpatient Perinatal. The constant pain of clinical OCD is just not survivable without the right proactive treatment.

STATUTORY INQUIRY IS NEEDED URGERNTLY!
My friend abbigail smith, who was featured on CHannel 4 dispatches was COMPLETELY failed by your trust.
You should now take accountable and LET A STATUTORY INQUIRY take place so that some justice can be served.
PLEASE LISTEN TO ALL THE FAMILIES WHO ARE ASKING FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!

No empathy for mental wellbeing
I didn’t want to put a star, I was treated in one of your hospitals. I was on one to one observation, and was able to take a substantial overdose that could have been fatal. The member of staff watching me, did not attempt to stop me. Another nurse ran in, and tried to get the tablets off me, she whistleblew to management and an investigation took part. Due to the member of staff being Agency, your trust has banned her from working in your hospital but she could be working elsewhere as a mental health nurse, this frightens me as I was told she showed no remorse. I was not kept in the loop throughout the whole process and it is now with the Obudsman. It’s sad that care does not seem to be happening.

Shocking
My daughter was in and out of your care for 4 years; during this time she was unnecessarily restrained, accused by a six foot male member of staff of attacking him (5ft underweight teenager) when she shrugged him off when he grabbed her, sexually assaulted by a patient, given drugs recorded on her notes that she is allergic to, was offered illegal drugs by other patients and had her belongings stolen. The consultant told me she wasn’t mentally ill, she just needed iron tablets; then he read her notes. Same consultant continuously pushed to discharge her and we had to fight for her to remain while a specialist unit was found only because we knew she would attempt suicide if discharged. There were some amazing nurses and HCAs but most left due to the lack of support they received. I’ve given you one star because I had to but really you shouldn’t be trusted to look after a hamster let alone vulnerable patients.

Useless
Where do I start, nothing has changed, people are loosing their lives, sometimes with no explanations. We are meant to be turning to these people and trusting them to help our children/family member or a friend. GPs can no longer help, so referrals are made instead, the out come of that, parents are holding their children’s funerals, instead of holding their children. So many parents, partners, friends, children and families failed by this trust and no one will take accountability.
How many more need to die, before something is actually done, to improve the standards of care!

Concerns dismissed by managers
Worked for voluntary services, patients referred by EPUT for social groups etc, often seemed to be at crisis point upon contacting, potentially unable to participate in groups run by volunteers without MH training, and sometimes didn’t appear to be what client wanted either, more concerned with when therapy would begin.
Discussed concerns with MH Team managers, basically said that they were clinicians, so we did not need to worry about their decisions, and that we shouldn’t ‘exclude’ their patients because of our concerns, somewhat missing the point that we were concerned about these people’s welfare.
More candid staff would admit to shortfalls caused by budgetary constraints, and there were certainly feelings at our end that patients were being ‘dumped’ on other services due to an inability to cope with demand.

Awful place
My dear grandson was very very ill with
Psychosis. He was sectioned for his own safety and admitted to the Linden centre.
I expected and trusted that he would be cared for and looked after but NO! A few days later whilst still in the care of EPUT he was dead!
I wanted to put Zero stars but no option for that .

Shockingly poor care in all areas
Under the care of this trust my daughter went so badly downhill and took over twenty overdose, the consultants don’t listen to patients or there families.patients are put under great risk as there is no protection in place, staff bully patients and abuse them.statutory public enquiry needs to be done to stop more lives and bullying continuing

Disgusting service, staff sexually abusing patients, staff selling drugs to patients. This was all exposed on radio and TV but the service brushed it all under the carpet. They give their usual feedback saying patients safety is their priory….all lies

I don’t know what to do with you!
I am loathed to tick any stars but apparently I have to so that I am able to post.
Afternoon
As per our conversation on the telephone you advised me to personally email you.
I explained that myself and some others had trouble leaving feedback about our experiences with the trust.
If I had known when we handed our young vulnerable daughter over into the care of people who were meant to know best, I would NEVER have done it.
For 8 years I had to watch my beautiful daughter failed by a broken, unreliable, unhelpful and judgmental trust.
I wonder if she hadn’t have been so freely prescribed tablets to change her mood at such a young vulnerable age would she still be alive today.
I had to attend her inquest with a SIR that was wrong and had 151 discrepancies on it. A bog standard SRI that is not suited to different individuals( just one template for every single soul suffering)
I had to watch someone sit a describe a person that they didn’t even know.
How can a person suffering with mental health issues from the age of 13 suddenly at the age of 18 look after and managed themselves because the law says they can?
There were numerous red flags that were missed and ignored.
The coroner at Chelmsford coroner’s court asked if the 10 recommendations made for areas of improvement are even read or appropriate training is even given.
Since my daughter has lost her fight, many more poor young souls have died, more recommendations are being made but not being read.
How many more of our young vulnerable adults have to die ?
This has to stop.
Ther isn’t one word in the dictionary that would express the trauma a parent/career has to go through and re-live on a daily basis.
So Fergus I hope that you do as you said and put this along with all the other complaints/stories that you should be receiving.
Kind Regards
A bereft mother, sister, grandparent, cousin and friends

Calling for a Statutory Public inquiry
I too would give zero stars, but no option.
My son Matthew Leahy , just 20, died within 7 days of admittance to the linden center
Came out with GHB in his system. Unexplained bruises and unexplained needle wounds in his groin. His claim of rape was ignored and he was totally failed.
Ten years on and none one person held to account , even though criminal offences proven.
I could not possibly summarise my experience in 45 characters, but suffice to say I’m calling for a statutory public inquiry into @eputnhs with multiple families

DISGRACE AND FAILING DAILY !
If I could leave zero stars I would
My husbands uncle was failed by EPUT found hanging.
Today I nearly lost my brother due to EPUT failures and STILL no assessment !
January 2021, EPUT and NELFT failed my brother in law found dead decomposing
The service doesn’t even give bereavement support despite the families suffering trauma from eput failures you should be charged as a trust !

Terribly sub par
I have been under the ‘care’ of EPUT for over 25 years, I have only very very rarely received anything approaching proper care with the vast majority ranging from non existent, inept, corrupt to a downright negative impact on my mental health.
In short, I cannot rely on the MH services of EPUT to be of any use to me. In fact interaction with them is very likely to be a damaging and negative factor in my fight against my mental health problem.
Do WAY Better, currently you run a curcus.. NOT a health service

Awful
My son was continually ignored when begging for help. To cut a long distressing story short After being sent home from hospital straight away after two overdoses he killed himself
My rating is no stars but website wouldn’t let me do that
