Modern slavery is an issue often referred to in news headlines, but many of us are unsure as to what it actually means.
I recently met with Dan Pratt, who is an Antislavery Coordinator in Essex. He explained: People are being held in modern slavery right now in most communities across the UK and Essex. It is estimated by the Global Slavery Index that there are currently 122,000 people currently being exploited within modern slavery within the UK. Many are hidden in plain sight, being silenced by fear and unaware that support exists. They may be trapped in exploitation, unseen and unable to reach help.
Types of exploitation include forced criminality, including county lines, forced labour, sexual exploitation and domestic servitude.
We may encounter potential victims within our communities. We can all play our part in helping these vulnerable people escape and find protection and support. More information about the different types of exploitation and how to spot the signs can be found here.
If someone is in immediate danger phone 999. If we suspect someone is being exploited we can contact Crimestoppers or Essex Police through their online reporting tool or the Modern Slavery Helpline 08000 0171 700.
The seven minute video from the Home Office describes more about Modern Slavery within the UK.
Antislavery Day on the 18th October is a day which raises awareness about modern slavery and human trafficking within the UK and Europe. It was introduced in 2010 and related to an Act of Parliament relating to the need to raise awareness of the need to eradicate all forms of slavery and human trafficking. It is part of Anti-Slavery Week, which this year runs between Monday 13th and Saturday 18th October.
By being aware of the signs and knowing where to report our concerns, we can all play a part in helping to eradicate modern slavery.
