Breast Cancer Now- Moving Forward Course.

This blog marks the beginning of a new series that our Research Officer Beth is writing as part of her research project on living beyond cancer. Over the coming months, Beth will be writing about the range of services and organisations that she has visited. The aim of these blogs is to raise awareness of the support available across Essex for those living with and beyond cancer.

The value of peer support is frequently raised in conversations with those living with and beyond cancer. Once an individual’s hospital-based treatment has finished, they often describe feeling a sense of uncertainty and isolation as they adjust to physical and emotional changes and continue to process ongoing changes in their lives. Connecting with others who have been in similar situations can offer reassurance, understanding and a sense of community. As such, these blogs will highlight the benefit of peer support, and the great services available that provide the environment for individuals to connect.

Breast Cancer Now is a national charity that conducts high quality research and provides a range of support services to individuals affected by breast cancer. Their Moving Forward course is a free programme offered to anyone who has completed active/hospital-based treatment for primary breast cancer. Primary breast cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the breast tissue. Available both in-person and online, the course creates a safe and welcoming space where individuals can meet others who understand what they’ve been through, while offering practical information to help people take their next steps with confidence.

Moving Forward Information Leaflet

I had the opportunity to attend one of the Moving Forward courses in January this year as an observer. It was evident that the group setting is a key part of what makes the course so valuable. The session I attended had a warm, open atmosphere that encouraged individuals to share their experiences, ask questions, and support one another.

The course takes place over 2 half-days on consecutive weeks at a variety of locations across the UK. It is facilitated by trained professionals and features sessions from specialists such as breast care nurses.

In week 1, individuals are given the space to reflect. They are encouraged to share anything they are worried about and identify why it would benefit them to start ‘moving forward’. Participants also receive a Moving Forward booklet. This is a practical, easy-to-follow guide packed with useful advice, personal stories, and tips to support life after treatment.

In week 2, participants are provided with tools that may help them adjust to daily life and manage psychological and physical symptoms. They also have the opportunity to ask a healthcare professional any questions they have. Individuals are also given access to online resources and signposted to further support.

It was a privilege to attend one of the Moving Forward Courses. The non-judgemental atmosphere created a space for individuals to comfortably share their experiences and emotions. The small moments of shared laughter, tears and hugs were one of the highlights of my experience as an observer. It was clear how much individuals valued the chance to connect with others who truly understood what they were going through.
