A Memorable Day at Parliament: Healthwatch Essex Meets Chris Vince MP

On Monday, 24th February 2025, a team from Healthwatch Essex had the unique opportunity to visit Parliament and meet with Chris Vince, MP for Harlow and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers. This visit was a significant milestone for Healthwatch Essex, highlighting our dedication to improving the lives of unpaid carers.

The Journey Begins

Dr Kate Mahoney, Research Manager at Healthwatch Essex, leads the Research Ambassador Network. This network comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds who gain experience in health and care research within a charity setting. One member suggested dedicating a meeting to research on young carers, scheduled for Thursday, 29th May, from 2-4 pm online. The event aims to bring together researchers, individuals with lived experiences, and representatives from key carers’ organizations.

An Invitation to Parliament

Kate had the brilliant idea of inviting Chris Vince to the event. Although he couldn’t confirm his attendance due to prior commitments, he extended an invitation for the team to visit Parliament to discuss their work and the challenges carers face.

The Visit

Accompanied by two Experts by Experience—Arnaud, a young carer, and Charlotte, an adult carer—along with Jane, the Carers Voices Lead, Kate led the team to Westminster. The sun shone brightly behind Big Ben as they exited Westminster tube station, a rare treat for Arnaud, who usually only visits London for hospital appointments.

Upon arrival at Portcullis House, they were warmly welcomed by Emily, Chris Vince’s secretary. After introductions, Chris inquired about Healthwatch Essex’s workstreams. Kate elaborated on the upcoming research event, while Jane discussed the Carers Voices project, its aims, and achievements. This set the stage for Arnaud and Charlotte to share their personal experiences and the issues they face.

Key Issues Discussed

The discussion focused on several issues:

Charlotte, Jane and Arnaud outside Big Ben

  • Lack of Recognition: Carers often feel unrecognized by professionals and organizations.
  • Accessing Support: Many carers struggle to find the necessary support and are unaware of their rights.
  • Young Carers: Young carers face challenges in school, college, and work, affecting their future ambitions.
  • Medication Issues: Problems with brand/generic name prescribing cause supply issues.

Chris Vince’s Vision

Chris listened intently and shared his vision for the future:

  • Every school and college should have a young carer lead.
  • Teacher training should include raising awareness of young carers.
  • Improve joined up working between health and social care services so that young carers and their families get the support they need at the earliest opportunity.

A Positive Outcome

The ambassadors felt that Chris was genuinely interested in their conversation. They left Parliament feeling heard and confident that they had effectively represented carers.

This visit to Parliament was not just a meeting but a significant step towards raising awareness and advocating for the needs of carers. The dedication and passion of the Healthwatch Essex team, combined with the support of Chris Vince, promise a brighter future for carers across Essex.
