A Visit to Essex Pedal Power

There’s an exciting program called Essex Pedal Power that is changing lives for the better. This project gives FREE bikes to people in the most disadvantaged areas – to help more people cycle, stay active, and improve their overall health.

What is Essex Pedal Power?

Essex Pedal Power has already given out over 1,300 bikes since 2021 when it was launched, helping to improve mental health, build friendships and make communities stronger. The idea comes from Birmingham’s successful Big Birmingham Bikes, which has given away over 9,000 bikes to those in need since 2016. Many people can’t afford a good bike, which costs around £500, so this program aims to change that.

Support Available

Extra help is offered to make sure more people can enjoy their bikes, such as:

– Free lessons for those learning to ride.

– Bike maintenance workshops to keep bikes in good shape.

– Guided bike rides to help people ride together and explore the community.

Growing the Program

Because of its success, Essex Pedal Power is expanding. It has now started in Colchester, Basildon, Harwich, and Dovercourt, and is giving away children’s bikes on Canvey Island. The program plans to distribute over 5,000 bikes by 2025. Essex Pedal Power also works on improving local cycling paths and bike parking to make riding safer and easier for everyone.

The Greenstead Project

We recently attended an event in Greenstead, Colchester to learn more about their project and how effective it has been. Over 500 bikes have been given to people in Greenstead, with about third being for children. Sally, the project leader, has been running weekly free biking lessons on Thursdays.  When asked about the impact of the program in Greenstead, Sally said:

“We have opened the doors for easy access to work and education. We are bringing people together to be active and socialise.”
