Needing care and equipment to enable independence at home can be a costly business. Have you checked that you are in receipt of all the benefits that you are entitled to? Have a look at the list below and see whether there is something you could be claiming:
- Attendance Allowance is for people who have reached the state retirement age and have a physical and/or mental disability, and have needed help either to care for themselves of supervision to stay safe for a period of over 6 months.
- Carer’s Allowance could be applied for if you look after someone else for 35 hours a week or more.
- Disabled Facilities Grants are available if you are disabled and need to make changes to your home such as widening doors or installing ramps.
- Blind Person’s Allowance is an amount that is added to your tax threshold so that you can earn more before being taxed.
- Television Licenses are free if you are over the age of 75.
It’s important to be aware of what is available so that if circumstances change, you know where to go for help. If navigating the benefits system feels daunting, there are agencies who can help you through the process.
