Healthwatch Essex has been working in partnership with Blind Veterans UK. We spent the run up to Christmas with the Blind Veteran’s Choir, hearing their stories of military service and their experiences of health and social care. One of the stories was that of 91-year-old Les Brown who told of us of his time at Belsen during the war. He lost his sight after two incidents, one in which a bomb landed on a pile of soot in a railway yard, and later after being shot in the head by the Hitler Youth, during an ambush in Germany.
